How many clicks do I need?

You are here:

How many clicks you need depends on how many monthly searches your keyword gets, what position you are at currently, and what position you are aiming for.

We start with the average CTR (click-through rate) for each ranking position, which you can get by searching Google or using the chart below from Moz.com:
expected SERP CTR chart for first page of Google

Calculate the percentage difference between the CTR of your current position and the target position on the first page of Google.

For example, if you are 5th and you are looking to try to move to 2nd right now, that’s 14% – 6% which is 8%. Bump this figure up just a bit to be safe, as your monthly search count will increase from the clicks that we send, so call it 10% in our example.

Next, we simply multiply our percentage above by the monthly search count, and that’s the approximate number of clicks that you need. For our example, let’s use 1,000 monthly searches, so 1000 * 10% = 100 clicks. So in this case we would need around 100 clicks from SerpClix every month.

Use our calculator here to simplify all of this math!

Note: We recommend only targeting one spot of improvement at a time. For example, if you are in position 5, start by targeting position 4, rather than position 1. If you are not on the first page currently, then start by targeting position 10 (bottom of the first page) and then work your way up from there.

There are various online options you can use to track your keyword locations and keyword search volume. SEMRush.com and Moz.com are two popular paid services, or you can use Google Search Console for free: https://search.google.com/search-console

Google’s ranking algorithm is often more art than science, so there is no one right way to do this, but with a slow and steady improvement in your organic CTR over an extended period (at least 3-6 months), Google’s ranking algorithm is very likely to eventually take notice.
